1) About Tooth Structure:

A tooth consists of enamel, dentin, cementum & pulp tissues. The dental pulp exists in the center of the tooth, through which a nerve runs which is called the dental pulp.

2) What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal is performed when the soft inner part of the tooth, i.e. pulp, is injured or became inflamed or infected.
The inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside part of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, and then filled and sealed. This is a quick, comfortable and Painless Procedure that can relieve your pain and Save your natural tooth. It’s also abbreviated as RCT.
3) When Root Canal is Needed?
  • Deep decay (involving pulp) due to untreated cavity.
  • Crack or chip in the tooth.
  • An injury to the tooth (pulp can still get damaged even if tooth is not cracked due to injury).
  • Severe pain while chewing or biting.
  • Swelling on gum (persistent pimples on gum).
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold even after sensation has been removed.
  • Tender gums.
  • Discolored (darkening) tooth.
4) Steps of Root Canal Treatment:
  • Anesthetic: Local anesthesia is used to numb the area.
  • Removing the pulp: The damaged pulp is carefully removed.
  • Cleaning & disinfection: The canal is cleaned with disinfectant.
  • Filling the canal: The canal is filled and sealed.
  • Permanent filling: The opening of the tooth is filled with a permanent material.
  • Crown for tooth: A crown is placed to protect the weakened tooth.
5) Aftercare:

You may feel sensitivity while eating and chewing for a while. In this case, painkillers are prescribed according to the patient’s dental condition. So the RCT does not require any special aftercare other than maintaining clean and hygienic oral health.
